Assessments are the first stage of a treatment process, but mental health assessments may also be used for other varying purposes. The assessment includes social and biographical information and direct observations. An assessment is most commonly carried out for clinical and therapeutic purposes, to establish a diagnosis and formulation of the individual's needs, as well as to plan the individual's care and treatment. Assessments will be provided at Empowering Parents.

Family Therapy: The focus of this service is to correct family dysfunction so that the children of the family may remain in their home rather than be placed in alternative care or, if in placement, be reunited with the family. The service should be of limited duration, generally three months to two years. Services shall include family therapy sessions, if recommended, including structured interaction led by the provider, communication exercises, role playing, task assignment and analysis, and parenting skills training. This service is provided on a sliding fee scale or insurance basis.

Individual Therapy: The focus of this service is to provide one-on-one services with clients to focus on their specific needs. The goal is to work through whatever concerns or issues that has caused great distress into their lives. This process should help clients find ways to master coping skills and talk through various problems and receive open and honest feedback in ways to address certain situations. This service is provided by a sliding fee scale or insurance basis.

This is not considered “therapy” as this service is primarily necessary to work with adults who have high conflict in raising children. This service is utilized in circuit and family court and goals are to teach parents how to work together. The goal is to specifically work on the issues at hand and how parents can find a way in parenting their children with minimal friction. This is not used as a mediation tool, however; if we are successful than it is possible a parenting plan can be utilized. This is not an insurance-based program and will be utilized through the sliding fee scale.

Generally, services start in our office setting where you will have a room with yourself and your child/children and a parent aide. This parent aide will be present for all discussions and activities between parent and child. This program is usually court-ordered but, at times, parents can agree to use our services. This service is provided on a sliding fee scale. Supervision can be provided either by a parent aide or by a therapist, based on need. Our job is to ensure the safety and security of the children and provide the parent that we are supervising with education and assistance, as needed.

The Parenting Education and Training Program will bring evidence-based, parent education and training to the clients. The object is to bring a consistent standard of quality services resulting in positive outcomes for children and families. It is desired that the parent be able to demonstrate one or more new skills taught by the contractor in their program. To verify the client's modeling competency-based instructional program the contractor will make at least one visit outside the instructional program to the client(s) home to observe, facilitate, and give feedback to the parent on their parenting skills. We utilize Nurturing Parenting program as this program is trauma based and provides skills to parents to learn empathy and appropriate discipline strategies.

Empowering Parents utilizes the Anger Management Workbook and Curriculum by Richard Pfeiffer, M.Div, Ph.D. This twelve-week curriculum focuses on understanding the situations and components of where anger comes from and the various other emotions that often accompany anger as symptoms. The course utilizes an anger log to identify anger triggers so that meaningful coping mechanisms can be developed to ward off anger spirals. Throughout the workbook, clients learn assertive communication, which increases their ability to compromise. They also learn conflict resolution techniques by following a 10-step method. The course provides examples of techniques for managing stress and anxiety, which are key contributors to anger. Finally, we have multiple lessons that touch on meditation and mindfulness as tried and true coping mechanisms for regulating and maintaining calmness before, during, and after stressful situations.
